Chapter Sixteen

Nolan froze at the sound of his codename. No one outside the Protection Bureau or the Silverguard should have known his old call sign, the nom-de-guerre he’d used in his missions for Agent Styver.

Yet there was no doubt or uncertainty in Ex-Umbra’s voice. Somehow, the hacker had gotten his hands on Nolan’s identity. And not just that; he had real footage of Nolan moving through New Avalon. Footage Taia had—or should have—erased.

Nolan’s thoughts whirled, analyzing the helmeted man sitting in front of him. Ex-Umbra was neither broad-shouldered nor strong; on the contrary, he was a slim man who barely filled out the simple jacket and pants he wore. Yet with a few words, he’d proven himself a greater threat then Wolfe and Gavin combined. He had information and evidence that the two muscle-bound ex-soldiers could never have obtained.

But exactly how much he had on Nolan remained to be seen. Ex-Umbra had gotten his attention. Time to find out what he knows.

“Cerberus?” Nolan cocked his head. “I’m not familiar with the name.”

“Of course you are.” Ex-Umbra snapped his long, slim fingers, and the huge screen behind him shifted. The footage of him in his combat suit disappeared, replaced by a digital dossier displaying Nolan’s face, name, planet of origin, date of birth, and personal records, which covered everything from his time in the military to the aftermath of his medical discharge. Every muscle in Nolan’s body tensed as page after page of his life flashed past—including, to his horror, lists of missions he’d undertaken for the Protection Bureau.

Bloody hell! It took all his willpower to avoid reacting, to avoid showing any sign of the panic he felt stirring within him. How does he have all this?

He scanned the information again; he saw only allusions to his Silverguard service, which meant Ex-Umbra hadn’t cracked the special forces’ database. There was only one other place he could have gotten it—the same place he’d obtained the smart titanium alloy cells he’d used for the direct attack on Taia and the combat suit.

A chill ran down Nolan’s spine. Ex-Umbra hacked the damned Protection Bureau!

He struggled to remain composed, to keep his face placid. If Ex-Umbra had gained access to the Protection Bureau’s data, who knew just how much information he could get his hands on? Nolan’s eyes snapped back to the screens, which displayed not only countless details of his life and the military records stored on the Protection Bureau’s servers—including the number that linked him to Cerberus of Warbeast Team—but also real-life evidence of the hits he’d carried out at Agent Styver’s behest.

Instinct screamed at him to leap at the hacker, to snap Ex-Umbra’s scrawny neck with his bare hands. But he couldn’t. Not without Taia reconfiguring the smart steel cells of the wheelchair into the mobility framework. It would take her a matter of seconds—more than enough for the synth soldiers to register the threat to their master. They’d cut him down before he got to his feet.

Ex-Umbra must have detected his reaction, because the hacker leaned back in his chair.
